Atlanta—Fernbank Museum of Natural History will reveal how archaeology works through hands-on activities, displays and demonstrations at Archaeology Day on Saturday May 1, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., presented as part of Georgia Archaeology Awareness Month. Visitors will have opportunities to learn how archaeologists dig through layers of soil to understand human life thousands of years ago; participate in screening and mending activities; discover how early inhabitants used primitive tool technology and pottery; and more.
Scheduled Activities
Archaeology Screening and Mending Activity - Act like an archaeologist as you sift through dirt and sand to find artifacts, and try piecing them back together.
Society for Georgia Archaeology - Enjoy hands-on activities guided by real archaeologists.Close to Home: Historic Cemetery Preservation - Learn more about this special project between the Flat Rock Archive, local archaeologists and Georgia State University students.
Pottery Demonstration - See ancient pottery recreationist Patrick Severts at work and create your own clay masterpiece to take home.
Ancient Weaponry - Discover how ancient weapons were created using primitive tools and technologies. Darts, spear heads, and a variety of other tools will be on display.
War of 1812 Display - Artifacts from the War of 1812 from a local Georgia Archaeology site will be on display including buttons, mini ball bullets, and a variety of other artifacts.
Tool Demonstrations - Use modified versions of ancient tools to practice sharpening and slicing techniques.
Chunkey Game - This ancient game was played by Native Americans throughout the Southeast starting almost 1,000 years ago. It was played by rolling a disc-shaped stone and throwing spears to the location where the stone might stop. Test your Chunkey skills at Fernbank using foam spears and rubber game pieces.
Archaeologist’s Knapsack Craft - Learn more about the tools used by archaeologists and create a craft to take home.
Ancient Weaponry Demonstrations - Watch Brian Floyd demonstrate a variety of different primitive technologies including the atlatl, bow and arrow, darts, and a blowgun.
All Archaeology Day activities are included with Museum admission. Museum admission is $15 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, $13 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children under 3 and for Museum members.
